I think a lot of people have a hard time giving up sweets. I know I did. From what I have read, pure maple syrup and raw honey are the most natural and nutrition filled sweeteners. They also taste the best. It only took a few weeks to detox myself of sugar. Now I do not have sweet cravings anymore. I have changed my old recipes with white flour and white or brown sugar and butter to recipes with soured whole flour, arrowroot, maple syrup, honey and coconut oil.
Too much flour and sugar have been difficult on our stomaches. By using a natural and unrefined flour and cutting it with arrowroot helps our bodies digest it easier. Using any raw and unrefined sweetener will also be easy to digest.
Here is my recipe for peanut butter cookies. I like these better than with brown sugar. Never thought I would (or could) say such a thing.
Peanut Butter Cookies
4 oz (1 stick) butter
2 oz expeller pressed coconut oil
6 oz pure maple syrup
6 oz peanut butter
1 teaspoon sea salt
1 large egg
4 oz unbleached, organic, whole wheat pastry flour
4 oz arrowroot powder
1 teaspoon baking soda
All ingredients should be at room temperature. Cream butter, coconut oil and maple syrup until smooth. Add peanut butter and salt. Slowly mix in egg. Add flour, arrowroot and baking soda and mix until just incorporated. Scoop balls on to stainless steel sheet pan or baking stone. Bake at 325 degrees for 15-20 minutes or until the bottom edges turn light brown. Cool and enjoy! Makes about 2 dozen cookies. Add 4 oz of raw cacao nibs in with the dry ingredients for a chocolate peanut butter goodness.
